12 things wise people do (but never talk about)

Wise people are known for their intelligence and good decision-making skills, but have you ever wondered what they do behind closed doors to maintain their wise ways?

The truth is, they’re doing things that they never talk about! From daily routines to secret habits, these unspoken actions are what separate the wise from the rest.

In this article, we’ll be diving into the top 12 things wise people do (but never talk about) to give you a glimpse into their secret wisdom-boosting practices!

1) They’re patient

First up on our list of things wise people do but never talk about is being patient.

Wise people know the importance of “the long run”. They have extreme amounts of patience but here’s the catch – it has to be for things of value, things that truly matter.

This could be:

  • Their career
  • Their education
  • Their relationships
  • Their hobbies

Whatever a wise person deems as important, they’ll have the patience to see it through and do it to the best of their ability.

They don’t look for shortcuts or give up mid-way…quite simply, they’re continuously investing in themselves, and their future!

2) They reflect and learn from their mistakes

But here’s the thing, even if you’re patient and throw your all into everything you do, you’re still gonna make mistakes.

And the same applies to wise people.

But one thing that they do without ever really talking about is reflecting – they ensure that they learn something from every single mistake they make so they don’t do it again!

An easy way to start doing this is by keeping a journal. Make a note of what went wrong, and how you could have handled it differently. Then, write down what you’d do if faced with this situation again.

With time, reflecting and learning from your mistakes will become second nature!

3) They never stop learning

But as well as learning from their mistakes, wise people also never stop learning.

They might not reveal this to the world, but rest assured that even when you think they’re at home “relaxing”, they’re probably stuck in a book or reading an article online.

So why do they do this?

The truth is, wise people recognize the importance of staying up to date with what’s going on in the world.

They also enjoy learning as it encourages them to learn new perspectives and improve their critical thinking skills.

That’s why when you bump into them on the street or see them at work, they’ve always got an interesting opinion or piece of advice to share!

4) They listen to others

But when they’re not dishing out the latest news or stats, wise people have no issue listening to others.

They know that we were given two ears and one mouth for a reason, to hear better and speak less!

The bottom line is, when you speak, you’re only repeating what you already know. But when you listen, you have the opportunity to learn something new!

And that’s what wise people are all about – continuously learning and expanding their horizons.

5) They know when to let go

Next up on things wise people do (but never talk about) is their ability to let go.

Whether that’s a toxic relationship, a project that simply won’t take off, or a bad memory from childhood…they put the past behind them and move firmly on!

The truth is, they may not even be aware that they’re doing half of these things listed, but subconsciously they’ve learned to focus on the present

They don’t let things hold them back or drag them down. Wise people know that the art of letting go frees you up to focus on more important things!

6) They are open-minded

One of the reasons why wise people are able to let go is that they keep an open mind

They don’t limit themselves to one way of thinking, or one lifestyle choice. They like to keep their options open and usually, they go with the flow of life.

Have you ever noticed that wise people adapt to change so well?

The reason is that they never get too fixated on one thing or another. So, when life throws a curveball, they’re ready to bend and adapt. But they never break.

And one thing that helps with that is…

7) They can laugh at themselves

Oh yes, you might not have realized this but wise people tend to be self-assured and quietly confident, so much so that they will happily laugh at themselves!

They don’t take life too seriously.

For all their wisdom and smarts, they know they’re just like anyone else; prone to making mistakes and doing silly things!

But that’s not all…

A wise person also knows the importance of laughter and not being so caught up on looking good or maintaining your reputation or image.

They don’t feed their ego, and as a result, it makes life a lot more enjoyable!

8) They look below the surface

Talking about not being caught up on looking good or not, another thing that wise people do (but never talk about) is avoid judging people based on their looks.

They tend to dig deeper under the surface; they want to know what makes people tick, what traumas they’re holding onto, and what experiences they bring to the table.

All of this helps wise people understand the company around them better.

The truth is, they know that looks can be deceiving.

So what a wise person looks for is substance!

9) They pick their friends…wisely

Following on from my last point, another thing wise people do an exceptional job of is surrounding themselves with the right people.

They don’t just make friends with anyone…oh no. Wise people choose their friends extremely carefully because after all, you are the company you keep!

The brutal truth is, our friends have an enormous influence over us, even if we don’t realize it.

Well, wise people realize it. That’s why they tend to look for these qualities in a friend:

  • Integrity
  • Honesty
  • Respect
  • Maturity
  • Dependability

Forget finding friends to hang out with when bored, a wise person seeks friendships that add value to their lives!

10) They don’t make excuses

Now, we mentioned earlier that wise people tend to reflect and learn from their mistakes

But to do that, they have to take ownership and responsibility for their actions.

Put simply: they don’t make excuses.

They see real value in being honest when they’ve messed up – it’s a learning curve for them, and for anyone else that was involved.

11) They take care of themselves

Moving on from the last point, wise people tend to take good care of their mental and physical health

They take responsibility for their well-being because they know that it’ll be important in the long run!

And here’s the thing – if you don’t look after the basics, the rest tends to go down south, very quickly.

If you’re unable to sleep well or eat well, your ability to concentrate and learn new things is hindered.

That’s why wise people ensure they take care of themselves; they eat, sleep and exercise well.

But that’s not all, as I mentioned at the start, they are constantly investing in themselves and their future. This is just another example of doing that!

12) They set strong boundaries

And finally, another thing that wise people do (but never talk about) is set strong boundaries

Boundaries are a way to let people know what you will tolerate and what crosses the line.

And wise people know that it’s essential to keep these boundaries strong, especially with people who are disrespectful, or time-consuming (in a negative way).

You see, wise people value their own time and emotions. They don’t let people abuse or take advantage of them!

Can you become wise?

The truth is, all of us can be wise but wisdom tends to come with experience.

We might see a child who appears “wise beyond their years” but often this comes to having high levels of maturity.

Wisdom, on the other hand, comes from learning from our mistakes, and experiencing as much of life as we can!

So, the answer is, yes, you can become wise

But you need to start living consciously; reflect, listen to others, lower your ego, educate yourself and choose your friends wisely.

This is a great starting point to one day be the wise person in your family or friendship group!
