We’re brought up to think that if we achieve certain things, we’ll find happiness.

Power, money, status, success, fame, material possessions – once you have that, you’ve got it all.

Or do you?

Turns out, that we’re being sold bullsh**. If you look closely at people who “have it all”, you’ll find that they’re no better off than you and me.

My advice is to look for happiness and meaning elsewhere.

I’m talking about getting in touch with nature and the world around you.

I’m talking about embracing your spiritual side.

And what better way to do that than by taking advice from some of the most spiritual people on the planet – shamans?

Without further ado, here are 7 powerful lessons you can learn from a shaman to transform your life (for the better):

1) The importance of connecting to nature

When was the last time you went for a long walk in the woods or stopped to listen to the birds singing their song and the stream burbling over the rocks?

I’m asking because shamans believe that connecting with nature is a vital part of transforming your life.

By spending time in nature and observing natural cycles (day and night, seasons, moon phases, tidal cycles, etc.), you’ll start to feel a sense of interconnectedness with Mother Earth and the world you live in.

What’s more, connecting with nature is sure to help you reset your mind, recharge, reduce stress, and find balance and harmony in your life.

2) The mind-body-spirit unity

The body, mind, and spirit are all interconnected, ask any shaman.

It turns out that you can actually use this knowledge to your advantage – to transform your life for the better.

For example, did you know that a lot of the time backaches are caused by stress?

It’s true!

Using over-the-counter painkillers will only help you relieve some of the symptoms, but they won’t treat the cause.

That’s why you need to deal with the root of the problem – stress (what causes it, why, and how you can manage and alleviate it) if you want the backaches to go away.

I strongly encourage you to integrate holistic practices into your life, such as meditation, yoga, tai chi, or energy healing – trust me, they’ll have an astonishing effect on your overall well-being!

Not only will these practices contribute to your physical health, but they’ll also give you mental clarity and encourage spiritual growth.

3) Understanding energy

Did you know that shamans are attuned to energy fields and believe in the flow of energy in the body and the environment?

Understanding and harnessing the principles of energy can play a big part in your quest for personal transformation and holistic well-being.

You see, energy is considered the life force that flows within and around us and it plays a crucial role in shaping our physical, mental, and spiritual experiences.

The problem is that sometimes, there are disruptions or blockages in this flow which can lead to physical or emotional imbalances.

Practices such as yoga or Tai Chi are a great way to keep that energy flowing and make sure there are no blockages.

To learn more about energy and how it can transform your life, read up on:

  • Grounding techniques: Try walking barefoot or visualization exercises to anchor yourself to the present.
  • Conscious breathing: Breathwork exercises have a powerful impact on energy regulation.
  • Energy awareness and mindfulness: Mindfulness plays a significant role in cultivating energy awareness. Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily life to adjust your energy fluctuations.
  • Energetic healing: You may want to explore reiki or acupuncture with certified practitioners for a personalized experience.
  • Crystals and energy amplification: Crystals are one of the tools shamans use for balancing and amplifying energy.
  • Balance and harmonize energy centers: Shamans believe in the existence of energy centers within the body. Learn about and work with your chakras to balance and harmonize your energy. The positive results include emotional stability, mental clarity, and a heightened sense of well-being.

4) Rituals

The thing about rituals is that they bring structure and significance to daily life.

They also play an important part in shamanism.

Now, when it comes to shamanic rituals, you’ve got everything from drumming and chanting to vision quests to the use of psychoactive plants or substances, such as ayahuasca and peyote.

Next-level stuff, right?

But you don’t have to have the same type of rituals as shamans to learn from them and incorporate rituals into your life.

For example, some of my rituals include my morning routine – coffee and breakfast, then taking the dogs for a long walk.

My morning ritual helps me start my day with structure and purpose which can be really helpful on those cold winter days when I don’t feel like getting out of bed.

Creating personal rituals, whether they be morning routines like mine, daily meditation practice, yoga, or bedtime rituals such as prayer or gratitude practices can transform your life.

These practices will help anchor you in the present moment and give you a sense of purpose.

5) Embracing the shadow

According to shamans, it’s important to acknowledge the shadow self – the hidden, less-explored aspects of our personalities.

Embracing your shadow self will help you attain holistic self-awareness and pave the way for healing and personal transformation.

But what does that mean exactly?

It means not running away from those parts of yourself that aren’t perfect. It means accepting and embracing your vulnerabilities and faults – your shadows

But wait, there’s more…

Exploring and accepting your vulnerabilities and challenges through creative expression, journaling, or therapy, and embracing your shadow self is sure to transform your life by encouraging self-acceptance and genuine personal growth.

6) Ancestral wisdom

Here’s something else you can learn from a shaman – to honor those who came before you.

You see, drawing on ancestral wisdom and traditions can transform your life by providing a deep sense of connection to your roots and a sense of continuity with the past.

Here are some examples of how drawing on ancestral wisdom can positively impact your life:

  • Integrating mindfulness practices inspired by ancestral traditions, such as meditation techniques or breathing exercises, will help you manage stress, foster a sense of inner peace, and improve your overall well-being.
  • Taking part in cultural celebrations and festivals will give you a sense of community, belonging, and shared identity. It’s a wonderful way to connect with your heritage and pass down traditions to future generations.
  • Incorporating traditional dietary practices and locally sourced, whole foods based on ancestral culinary wisdom is sure to contribute to your physical health and well-being.
  • Embracing ancestral beliefs on nature as being sacred can inspire a deeper connection to the environment. Spending time in nature and practicing eco-friendly habits will not only transform your life but contribute to the conservation of the planet for the good of everyone.
  • Taking part in the tradition of storytelling passed down through generations can provide valuable insights and guidance. This can involve exploring family histories, cultural myths, or ancestral narratives.
  • Exploring traditional arts and crafts or artisanal skills specific to your cultural heritage can be a great way to reconnect with ancestral creativity.
  • Taking part in community initiatives inspired by ancestral communal values will give you a sense of belonging and mutual support. This could include joining cultural groups, volunteering, or taking part in activities that strengthen community bonds.

7) Gratitude

Living in gratitude and appreciation is a powerful lesson that can be drawn from shamanic traditions and practices.

Here’s how incorporating gratitude into your life can be transformative:

  • Living in gratitude involves appreciating the natural world, acknowledging its gifts, and understanding our interconnectedness with it.
  • In shamanic teachings, cultivating positive energy through gratitude is believed to attract more positive experiences. This shift in focus from what is lacking to what is present can lead to an overall improvement in mental and emotional well-being.
  • Living in gratitude involves recognizing the contributions and sacrifices of those who came before, fostering a deeper sense of connection to one’s roots and cultural heritage.
  • Shamanic traditions frequently include rituals of thanks and offerings to spirits, deities, or the natural world. Incorporating simple rituals of gratitude into daily life, such as expressing thanks before meals can create a mindset of appreciation.
  • Living in gratitude encourages mindfulness, being fully present in the moment, and appreciating the simple joys of life. This aligns with shamanic practices that often involve being present in nature and appreciating the beauty in the small everyday experiences.
  • Shamanic teachings often emphasize the power of words and thoughts. Living in gratitude involves using positive affirmations and expressing gratitude verbally, encouraging an optimistic and constructive mindset.
  • Living in gratitude promotes a balanced perspective, helping us navigate challenges with a more resilient and positive outlook. It helps us focus on what is working well while we address areas that need improvement.
  • Practicing gratitude is linked to increased resilience in the face of adversity. In shamanic teachings, resilience is essential for navigating the challenges encountered in spiritual journeys and life.

Final thoughts

Incorporating these powerful lessons from shamanic traditions can lead to a more mindful, positive, and spiritually connected life.

Moreover, they will transform the way you perceive and engage with the world around you, fostering a deep sense of appreciation for the abundance and interconnectedness of life.
