Emotional intelligence is one of the most revered traits in the psychology world. It’s been linked with happiness, success and likability.
Many people would tell you that they don’t think they are emotionally intelligent, but all emotional intelligence means is that you are in tune with what you are feeling and how you project yourself into the world.
People who are emotionally intelligent tend to have these 5 special traits. You might find you have these too.
1) You Apologize
Emotionally intelligent people know when they need to say they are sorry. They know that swallowing their pride will make a situation better and don’t mind saying they were wrong in order to make a person feel better or make the relationship stronger.
They also know that failure is necessary to achieve to success, so they take it in their stride and learn from their mistakes.
2) You Question What You Think You Know
Emotionally intelligent people question themselves and the world around them. They don’t take things at face value and they ask a lot of questions about what they think they know about themselves.
Emotionally intelligent people regularly engage in self-reflection, and always ask themselves whether it’s worth saying something out-loud. They simply have strong self-awareness.
They don’t rely on the past to dictate their future because they know they can change their emotions, feelings, and actions to suit a new day.
3) You Keep it Real
This one may sound a bit odd. After all, isn’t emotional intelligence about making others feel good?
Well, not quite.
Emotional intelligence doesn’t mean shying away from speaking the truth or softening the blow of tough feedback. Emotionally intelligent people tend to know how important it is that a hard message is communicated.
They don’t sugar coat anything. They say what they mean and they mean what they say. They will tell it to you whether it’s good or bad and they want the same thing from other people.
This can make for a difficult relationship if someone is not willing to share their feelings as often or as candidly as someone with high emotional intelligence, but emotionally intelligent people make no apology for their behavior.
4) You Seek Help For Your Mental Health
Because emotionally intelligent people are so in tuned with what they are feeling, they often seek help to ensure their emotions and feelings don’t get the best of them. They will seek therapy to help them manage their day-to-day emotions and feelings. There’s no shame in asking someone to help deal with what’s going on in your life.
5) You Aren’t Happy All the Time
If there is one thing emotionally intelligent people know, it’s that being tuned into your emotions doesn’t mean you are happy all of the time.
In fact, it means they are comfortable with not being happy all the time and they are okay with being in a state of discomfort or anger, sadness, or grief because they understand the feelings will pass.
Being emotionally intelligent does not refer to one’s agreeableness, or optimism; rather, it means they will take the good with the bad and understand that they need to work through emotions to make decisions about how to move forward.
Having strong emotional intelligence helps you navigate the myriad of emotions that humans experience on a daily basis.
What’s more, people with emotional intelligence may also be able to help others manage their emotions more effectively by coaching them through situations and circumstances that might cause them to lose focus because of their emotions.
Emotionally intelligent people don’t just work to help themselves, they help others too.
