I’ve always been curious about the people who seem to defy time—not just in how they look, but in their energy, curiosity, and zest for life. What’s their secret? Is it genetics, luck, or something more intentional?

Well, the truth is, staying young at heart isn’t about avoiding wrinkles or pretending you’re still 25. It’s about cultivating habits that keep your mind sharp, your body active, and your spirit engaged with the world.

Today, we’re diving into five daily habits that can help you do just that.

These have made a difference in my life, and they might just do the same for you.

Let’s get into ‘em. 

1. Keep learning and stay curious

Henry Ford once said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”

He was onto something. Lifelong learning isn’t just about picking up new skills—it’s about keeping your brain engaged, adaptable, and full of fresh ideas. 

Whether it’s reading a book, learning a new language, trying a new hobby, or simply staying curious about the world around you, continuous learning helps keep your mind sharp and your perspective open.

The key? Never assume you know it all. Ask questions. Seek out new experiences. Challenge yourself. Because the moment you stop learning, you stop growing—and staying young at heart is all about growth.

2. Move your body (in ways that you love)

We’ve heard it a million times: exercise is important.

According to Healthline, regular exercise can boost energy, improve mood, and even enhance brain health and memory. If that’s not a recipe for staying young at heart, I don’t know what is!

But let’s ditch the idea that movement has to be a chore. Instead, think of it as a way to reconnect with your body and give it some love. Maybe that’s dancing around your living room to your favorite songs (I’ve done it—no shame!), going for a run, or practicing yoga. The key is to find movement that feels good to you.

So find what moves you—literally—and make it a daily habit. Your body (and mind) will thank you.

3. Surround yourself with positive, youthful energy

Ever noticed how a child’s energy and enthusiasm can be contagious? You find yourself laughing more, moving more, and seeing the world with fresh eyes. 

That’s the power of being around youthful, vibrant energy—it rubs off on you.

As Jim Rohn famously said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” If you surround yourself with people who are negative, stagnant, or constantly complaining about getting older, that mindset can creep into your own life. On the flip side, spending time with curious, active, and optimistic people can keep you feeling energized and youthful.

Seek out friends who inspire you, engage in communities that uplift you, and don’t be afraid to connect with people of all ages. Youthfulness isn’t about a number—it’s about attitude, and the right company can help you keep yours fresh.

4. Embrace mindfulness and presence

I’ve talked about this before, but I can’t stress enough how staying present can make you feel more alive. Mindfulness is all about tuning into the here and now—paying attention to your breath, your senses, and the moment unfolding before you.

The Dalai Lama once said, “There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called Yesterday and the other is called Tomorrow.” That quote always reminds me that the present moment is the only place we can actually act, love, and live. Spending too much time worrying about tomorrow or lamenting the past can rob you of the joy available right now.

Practically, this can be as simple as taking a five-minute walk without scrolling through your phone, focusing instead on each step and each breath. Or you can sit quietly for a short meditation session. 

Either way, the more present you are, the more vibrant and youthful your outlook becomes..

5. Practice gratitude 

To wrap things up, let’s talk about gratitude. It might seem like a simple habit, but it has a profound impact on how youthful you feel inside. That sense of appreciation for the things you have, the people you know, and the experiences you enjoy can shift your entire perspective.

When you focus on what’s good in your life, you naturally feel lighter, happier, and more connected to the present moment—key ingredients to staying young at heart. 

The benefits are well backed up by experts, too. As the team at Harvard Health puts it, “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”

So whether it’s keeping a gratitude journal, saying a quick “thank you” each morning, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the little things, make gratitude a daily habit.

Because a grateful heart is a youthful heart.
