Today, I’ll be sharing nine behaviors you might want to kick to the curb. Let’s shine a light on those little things that could be standing in your way of being the most likable version of you.

1) Being self-centered

It’s a universal truth that people like to feel noticed and appreciated.

If you’re constantly focused on yourself, always steering the conversation back to your own experiences, achievements, or problems, you’re not giving others the chance to share their own stories. This can make you come across as self-centered and disinterested in others.

People want to be around those who show genuine interest in them. They want to feel heard and valued. 

Ask them about their day, their interests, their dreams, and fears. Listen attentively when they speak and respond with empathy. This simple act of shifting your focus from yourself to others can make a world of difference.

2) Negative attitude

I’ve found firsthand that one of the biggest barriers to being likable is a consistently negative attitude.

A few years back, I caught myself complaining about everything. It was my job, the weather, the traffic – you name it, I grumbled about it. It wasn’t until a close friend pointed out my constant negativity that I realized how draining it must have been for those around me.

I decided to shift my perspective. Instead of focusing on the negatives, I started looking for the positives in each situation. And let me tell you, it wasn’t easy. But gradually, I noticed a change, not just in my own state of mind but also in how people responded to me.

People are naturally drawn to those who radiate positivity. If you’re constantly bringing down the mood with your complaints or pessimism, people will start to avoid you. If you really want to be more likable and charming, try to keep a positive outlook and spread good vibes whenever possible.

3) Gossiping

Despite its common occurrence in social circles, gossiping is a behavior that can significantly reduce your likability. When you talk about others behind their backs, especially in a negative light, it creates a sense of mistrust.

Stay above the fray and focus on positive or neutral topics instead. It might be tough initially, especially if you’re in a group that loves to gossip, but being known as someone who doesn’t engage in such behavior can significantly boost your likability and charm.

4) Being judgmental

Nobody is perfect, and everyone has their own set of challenges and circumstances to deal with. 

Being judgmental creates a barrier between you and the people around you. It sends a message that you believe you’re superior or that you have the right to critique others’ decisions or lifestyle.

Instead, strive for empathy and understanding. Everyone has a story that led them to where they are, and nobody appreciates being judged without context.

By being more understanding and less judgmental, you’ll create a safe space for people to be themselves around you. And that’s a key ingredient in the recipe for likability and charm.

5) Not respecting boundaries

Every individual has their own comfort zone, and it’s important to respect that.

Whether it’s showing up unannounced at a friend’s house or insisting on discussing a topic someone is clearly uncomfortable with, constantly crossing boundaries can quickly turn people off.

Being aware of others’ comfort levels and respecting their boundaries can greatly enhance your likability. It shows that you value their feelings and respect their personal space.

Always remember – respect begets respect. If you want others to respect your boundaries, make sure you’re doing the same for them.

6) Lack of authenticity

Pretending to be someone you’re not can be exhausting, and people can usually sense when you’re not being genuine. True connections are formed when we let our guards down and allow our true selves to shine through.

Embrace your quirks, your passions, your flaws – they make you who you are. Don’t shy away from expressing your thoughts and feelings. Of course, it’s important to do so respectfully and considerately, but don’t suppress your true self just to fit in or please others.

7) Not keeping promises

Once, I made a promise to a friend to help him move on a weekend. But when the day came, I was exhausted from the week and decided to bail out.

It seemed like a small thing at the time but it ended up straining our friendship.

From that day forward, I made a commitment to myself – if I make a promise, I keep it. Whether it’s showing up on time for a meeting or delivering a project by the deadline, keeping your word is crucial.

When you break promises, you’re essentially breaking trust. And once trust is broken, it’s incredibly hard to rebuild. People want to associate with reliable individuals who stand by their word.

8) Being defensive

Criticism isn’t always easy to swallow, but how you respond to it can say a lot about your character. If you’re quick to become defensive or argumentative when faced with feedback or a differing opinion, it can make you appear closed-minded.

Being open to criticism and differing viewpoints shows that you’re willing to learn and grow. It shows that you value others’ opinions and are not just stuck in your own ways.
