Being dependent on your partner isn’t great because it puts a lot of pressure on them. It can stress them out big time and mess with your own independence and self-esteem.

When you rely on others, you’re also putting all your eggs in one basket and hoping for the best, which isn’t the smartest move.

So, to avoid getting dependent on others as you get older, you have to say goodbye to the following habits. 

1) Not saving and investing

I’ll lay it out directly: I hate being dependent on others. Not having complete control over my life is a terrible feeling. Yet, I, like most other people, have an employer, a mortgage, a family, etc. 

I’m dependent on others, and they’re dependent on me. It’s just how things are. On the other side, my wife is a SAHM at the moment, and she’s dependent on me now, basically. 

And I know how that feels because I was a SAHD a couple of years ago. As such, I know how important it is to look at every dollar twice before you spend it on something. 

You need to be financially responsible if you don’t want to depend on others too much. You need to save money for emergencies and retirement. 

Not doing this can lead to financial dependence on others down the line, and if something happens, you may find yourself without any means.

Saving and investing means you’re thinking ahead, so let’s talk about that for a minute. 

2) Not planning for the future

Okay, so being smart with money is one thing, but you also have to set goals and make plans for the future to give yourself direction and purpose. 

Whether it’s career goals, financial planning, or personal aspirations, having a roadmap can help you stay focused and independent.

So, get thinking about what you want and start making moves to get there. And one of the best ways to do that is to avoid the following:

3) Putting off learning new skills

I know firsthand what can happen if you neglect learning new skills and staying ahead of the curve. 

Back in the day, I was all about sticking to what I knew and avoiding anything that seemed too challenging or unfamiliar. 

But let me tell you, that mindset didn’t get me very far. I watched as friends and colleagues who were willing to step out of their comfort zones and learn new things soared ahead while I felt stuck in the same old rut.

It wasn’t until I finally decided to take the plunge and start picking up new skills that things started to change for the better. 

Sure, it was a bit intimidating at first, but the payoff was totally worth it.

4) Neglecting relationships

When you’re in a romantic relationship, you often neglect other people in your life. You feel like you almost don’t need anyone else because you have a partner now. 

And that’s a big, big mistake that leads to a road of dependency very quickly. That’s why you shouldn’t neglect other relationships with your friends, family, and peers and actively build a support network around yourself. 

Ultimately, you want to avoid relying solely on one person for everything as it strains the relationship and makes you more dependent.

5) Ignoring your health

Ignoring your health is like ignoring a ticking time bomb. It might not seem like a big deal in the moment, but trust me, it’ll catch up with you eventually. 

That’s why it’s so important to take care of your physical health now before it’s too late. This means making sure you’re getting regular exercise, eating right, getting enough shut-eye, and not skipping out on those doctor’s appointments. 

It might sound like a hassle, but it’s way easier to prevent health issues than it is to deal with them once they’ve already cropped up. 

Plus, taking care of yourself now sets the stage for a more independent future. After all, it’s pretty tough to go it alone when your body’s not cooperating.

6) Being afraid to ask for help

Let’s face it: nobody has it all figured out, and that’s totally okay. Whether it’s leaning on your friends for emotional support, asking your family for advice, or seeking help from a professional, there’s no shame in reaching out for a helping hand.

Ironically, asking for help when you need it actually promotes independence. It shows that you’re willing to take the initiative and seek solutions instead of passively relying on others.

And, most importantly, by reaching out to others, you maintain social connections and a sense of community, which are important factors in maintaining independence as you age.

7) Avoiding change

Embracing change helps you stay independent in the long run. Change often brings new opportunities for learning and personal growth. 

When you’re open to it, you unlock yourself up to new experiences and challenges that can help you expand your skills and knowledge, making you more capable and self-reliant.

And when you can bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward, you’re less likely to become dependent on others for support during tough times.

8) Ignoring mental health

For far too long, I didn’t realize that mental health is just as significant as physical health. Ignoring mental health can have serious consequences, impacting not only how we feel emotionally but also our ability to function in daily life. 

When we ignore our mental health, we find ourselves struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues without seeking the help we need. 

These issues can worsen over time, affecting our relationships, work, and general quality of life.

And stress is nowadays one of the main reasons why, collectively, our mental health has gone down the drain. 

9) Letting stress take over

Most people I know suffer from stress and anxiety, and it takes a toll on their physical and mental health. 

That’s why you need to develop healthy coping mechanisms such as exercise, breathing, meditation, mindfulness, or talking to a therapist to manage stress effectively.

What helps me perhaps the most is journaling. It’s a very simple method for reducing stress and anxiety by jotting down your fears, emotions, feelings, and behaviors. 

This simple habit has been shown to lower stress levels and promote relaxation as it helps you process difficult emotions, manage anxiety, and cope with life’s challenges more effectively. 

10) Ignoring signs of burnout

Like many, I simply ignored all signs of burnout until it was already too late. Being constantly busy meant I was leading a very unhealthy lifestyle, and slowly but clearly, my overall well-being was worsening. 

When you’re constantly pushing yourself without giving yourself time to rest and recharge, you’re setting yourself up for burnout.

And that’s very, very bad for you if you want to lead a long, healthy, and prosperous life, right? 

If you’re not careful, you could go so far off the deep end that there’s no way back, and you need someone to take care of all your needs. 

You see, burnout isn’t just a temporary inconvenience. It can have long-lasting impacts on your health and your life. 

It can weaken your immune system, boost your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, and even lead to mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

That’s why it’s so important to pay attention to the signs and take action before it’s too late.

Take care of yourself, ditch the bad habits, and focus on what makes you happy and healthy. Stay connected with friends and family, but don’t forget to stand on your own two feet.
