If someone displays these 9 behaviors, they’re a nasty person to be around

There’s a vast difference between people who are a joy to be around and those who leave you feeling drained.

This difference often boils down to behavior. The way someone acts can reveal a lot about their character and intentions.

Some behaviors are subtle indicators of a person’s nasty nature, while others are glaring red flags. And those of us who have been around the block a time or two have learned to recognize these signs.

Here’s a short list of nine behaviors that scream “nasty person.” If someone displays these, you might want to think twice before spending too much time with them.

1) Constant criticism

One of the most unpleasant behaviors someone can display is constant criticism.

We all know someone like this. No matter what you do, it’s never good enough. They always find something to critique, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.

While constructive criticism can be a good thing, there’s a fine line between being helpful and being nasty. When someone constantly belittles others and makes them feel inadequate, it’s clear that they’re not doing it to be helpful.

Their goal isn’t to improve others or make them better—it’s to make themselves feel superior. This is a classic behavior of nasty people.

When you encounter someone who can’t seem to say anything positive, take a step back and ask yourself if this is the kind of person you want to be around.

2) Gossiping

Another telltale sign of a nasty person is a fondness for gossip.

From my personal experience, I’ve found that those who spend their time discussing others usually aren’t the best company. There was this one colleague I had at my last job, always eager to share the latest office rumor. It didn’t matter who it was about or whether the information was true – the juicier, the better.

I soon realized that this constant need to gossip was more than just a harmless pastime. It was an attempt to spread negativity and stir up drama. More importantly, if they were so comfortable speaking ill of others to me, what were they saying about me when I wasn’t around?

Gossip is a clear indicator of a lack of respect for others’ privacy and a penchant for stirring up trouble. If someone displays this behavior, consider it a red flag.

3) Lack of empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It’s what makes us human and connects us on a deeper level.

However, some individuals are noticeably lacking in this department. They struggle to relate to the emotions or hardships of others, and sometimes they even derive pleasure from the distress of people around them.

In fact, did you know that a lack of empathy is a key characteristic of certain personality disorders, including narcissism and sociopathy? This isn’t to say that everyone who lacks empathy is a narcissist or sociopath, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on.

If someone seems indifferent or even gleeful about the pain and struggles of others, it’s a strong sign that they’re not someone you want to surround yourself with.

4) Frequent lying

Trust is the foundation of any healthy relationship, whether it be professional, platonic or romantic. But when someone has a habit of bending the truth or outright lying, it’s impossible to build that trust.

Lying can range from little white lies to massive deceptions. It might be about something insignificant or something that can have serious consequences. Either way, a habitual liar manipulates reality to suit their needs, showing a lack of respect for others.

If you notice someone is consistently dishonest, don’t brush it off. It’s a clear sign that they’re a potentially harmful person to be around.

When the truth is constantly twisted, it’s hard to feel secure and valued in their company.

5) Always playing the victim

We all encounter difficulties in our lives. It’s part of being human. But there’s a substantial difference between facing challenges and always playing the victim.

If someone constantly portrays themselves as the victim, blaming others for their misfortunes and never taking responsibility for their actions, it’s a warning sign. They’re likely trying to manipulate others into feeling sorry for them to avoid accountability.

This behavior is not only exhausting but also toxic. It can lead to a negative environment where problems are never solved because the person refuses to accept their part in them.

Steer clear of perpetual victims to maintain a positive and honest circle of influence.

6) Never apologizing

We all make mistakes. It’s an inevitable part of life. But what truly matters is how we handle these missteps.

A genuine apology shows maturity, responsibility, and empathy. It’s an acknowledgment of our wrongdoing and a commitment to do better in the future.

However, there are those who refuse to apologize, even when they’re clearly in the wrong. It’s as if admitting fault is a sign of weakness to them. They would rather hurt others or damage relationships than say two simple words – “I’m sorry.”

This behavior can be profoundly hurtful. It turns every conflict into a battle, with no regard for the feelings of others.

If someone consistently avoids apologies, it’s a sign that they value their pride over their relationships, and that’s not someone you want in your life.

7) Always needing to be the center of attention

Some people have a knack for turning every conversation, every event, every gathering into a one-person show. This need to constantly be in the spotlight can be incredibly draining for those around them.

I remember being at a friend’s wedding where one guest couldn’t help but turn every conversation back to themselves. Whether it was their recent vacation or their work promotion, they seemed incapable of letting anyone else have a moment. It was exhausting and honestly, it took away from the joy of the event.

This behavior shows a lack of consideration for others and an insatiable need for validation.

If someone consistently needs to be the center of attention, it’s a clear sign that they might not be the best person to have in your life.

8) Disrespectful behavior

Respect is a fundamental aspect of any relationship. It’s about acknowledging the feelings, wishes, rights, and traditions of others.

However, some people seem to have no concept of respect. They may interrupt you when you’re speaking, belittle your opinions, ignore your boundaries, or mock what’s important to you.

This kind of behavior is not only rude but also degrading. It shows a lack of empathy and a disregard for others’ feelings.

If someone displays consistent disrespect, it’s a strong sign that they’re not a pleasant person to be around.

Everyone deserves respect. Don’t let anyone make you feel otherwise.

9) They manipulate others

Manipulation is, without a doubt, one of the nastiest behaviors someone can display. Manipulative people twist words, situations, and emotions to serve their interests, often at the expense of others.

These individuals know how to play on your insecurities and guilt to get what they want. They’re masters at making you question your judgment and even your sanity. It’s a destructive and harmful behavior that can leave lasting scars.

If someone has a pattern of manipulating others, it’s the clearest sign that they’re not just unpleasant to be around – they’re downright toxic.

Protect yourself by recognizing this behavior and distancing yourself from it.

Your mental and emotional health is far too important to be compromised by such individuals.

Final thoughts: It’s about respect

When it comes down to it, the cornerstone of all healthy relationships is respect.

Respect for each other’s time, space, feelings, and experiences. When someone repeatedly exhibits the behaviors discussed above, it’s a clear sign that they lack this fundamental attribute.

It’s crucial to understand that you have the right to surround yourself with people who uplift you, not those who bring you down. No one should have to endure the company of a nasty person.

If you encounter someone displaying these behaviors, remember: it’s not about being judgmental; it’s about prioritizing your wellbeing. You deserve respect, kindness, and positivity in your life.

Whether it’s a friend, a colleague, or a loved one causing you distress, don’t be afraid to set boundaries or even distance yourself if necessary. Because ultimately, your mental and emotional health matters the most.

Take this knowledge and use it as a tool to navigate through your interactions with others. Recognize the signs and protect your peace.
