If a man displays these 9 behaviors, he has really strong character

Have you ever tried to pinpoint what makes a man of strong character?

I know I have. I am constantly observing, learning.

Through my experiences, interactions, and countless conversations, I’ve identified a few behaviors that stand out.

They’re not hidden treasures, but they’ve proven to be reliable indicators of a solid character.

It wasn’t an overnight discovery, but a process of elimination and validation. But these specific behaviors?

They’ve reshaped my understanding of what constitutes a true man of character.

Maybe they can do the same for you.

Let’s get started.

1) Upholding integrity

It’s easy to bend the rules when no one’s watching or when the consequences seem insignificant. However, individuals with strong character stick to their principles, even in the face of temptation or adversity.

This understanding was deepened as I delved into Brené Brown’s work on vulnerability and the power of staying true to oneself.

Similarly, discussions around the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, who famously said “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law,” further cemented my conviction.

For me, this behavior goes beyond just being honest or reliable. It’s a reflection of one’s relationship with themselves and their values, which can significantly influence their actions and decisions.

A man who upholds his integrity isn’t merely doing what’s right. He’s being genuine, truthful, and most importantly, he’s being himself consistently.

2) Demonstrating empathy

In a world that often equates masculinity with toughness and emotional detachment, empathy can be overlooked.

However, I’ve come to realize that it’s the ability to empathize, to truly understand and share the feelings of others, that sets apart men of strong character.

This is not just about lending a listening ear or offering a comforting shoulder. It’s about stepping into someone else’s shoes and seeing the world from their perspective.

A man who demonstrates empathy doesn’t just acknowledge others’ pain. He understands it, shares it, and does what he can to alleviate it.

Incorporating this behavior into my interactions has not only made me a better friend, partner, and colleague but has also opened my eyes to the true strength of character.

3) Owning up to mistakes

It’s natural to make mistakes—we’re human after all. But acknowledging them, especially when it’s easier to deflect or justify, takes strength.

Remembering the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, who said, “Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes,” I’ve come to value this behavior more.

To me, this trait goes beyond merely uttering an apology. It’s about taking responsibility for your actions, learning from them, and making a conscious effort to correct them.

When a man admits his mistakes, he’s not just saying he’s wrong. He’s showing humility, courage, and a willingness to grow.

4) Practicing active listening

Research from Harvard Business Review reveals that active listening, characterized by focusing intently on a speaker in a genuine attempt to understand them, is one of the most valuable skills a person can possess.

Think about it—how often do we truly listen without planning our response or letting our thoughts wander?

Active listening is more than just hearing what someone says. It’s about understanding their perspective, validating their feelings, and acknowledging their thoughts without immediate judgment or advice.

When a man practices active listening, he’s not just being polite. He’s showing respect, patience, and a willingness to learn and understand others.

5) Showing resilience in adversity

Ever wondered what separates men of strong character from the rest during times of adversity?

In my experience, it’s their remarkable resilience.

Adversity is a part of life. We all face challenges, setbacks, and disappointments. But it’s how we respond to these hardships that truly defines our character.

Men of strong character don’t crumble under pressure or give in to despair. They face adversity head-on, drawing strength from it rather than letting it define them.

For me, this  is more than just bouncing back. It’s about growth, learning, and coming back stronger after each setback.

When a man shows resilience in adversity, he’s not just surviving. He’s evolving, growing, and proving that his character is stronger than any challenge he faces.

6) Maintaining a positive attitude

Picture this: You’re faced with a difficult situation, something that threatens to upset your entire day. How do you react?

I’ve found that men of strong character choose to maintain a positive attitude, even in the face of adversity.

This doesn’t mean they ignore problems or deny negative emotions. Rather, they choose to approach challenges with optimism and perseverance, focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on the problem.

The enduring words of Winston Churchill come to mind, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” This encapsulates the essence of maintaining a positive attitude.

This isn’t just about staying upbeat. It’s about embracing a mindset that fuels resilience, encourages problem-solving, and motivates progress.

When a man maintains a positive attitude, he’s not just being optimistic. He’s demonstrating the strength of his character, irrespective of the circumstances.

7) Embracing humility

In a society that often equates self-worth with achievements and accolades, humility can be misinterpreted as self-deprecation or lack of ambition. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Humility is about recognizing your strengths and weaknesses, acknowledging when you’re wrong, and being open to learning from others.

When a man embraces humility, he’s not just showing modesty. He’s exhibiting respect for others and a deep understanding of his own imperfections.

8) Respecting others

In my observation, men of strong character consistently show respect for others.

Whether it’s acknowledging someone’s viewpoint in a debate, being considerate of people’s feelings, or valuing the time and effort of others, respect is a fundamental trait.

The renowned author of “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” Dale Carnegie, once said, “Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.” This quote resonates with me as it encapsulates the essence of showing respect.

When a man respects others, he’s not just being courteous. He’s demonstrating empathy, understanding, and a core aspect of his strong character.

9) Being dependable

Dependability is about being reliable and trustworthy. It’s about staying true to your word and following through on your commitments, even when inconvenient.

The words of American author Stephen Covey echo in my mind: “Trust is the glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships.”

When a man is dependable, he’s not just being reliable. He’s demonstrating his commitment, responsibility, and the strength of his character.

Practicing dependability has not only strengthened my relationships but also enhanced my self-esteem and personal integrity.

It might seem like a basic expectation, but its influence on character and trust-building is immense.

To sum up, a strong character isn’t defined by a single trait. It’s a blend of behaviors like integrity, empathy, resilience, and dependability.

Each plays a crucial role in shaping a man of substance.

So why not start embracing these behaviors today?

Your character is your legacy. Make it a strong one.
