7 Powerful Exercises to Build Your Mental Toughness

If there’s one thing you can count on life, it’s change. The journey of life is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, challenges, obstacles and triumphs. Out of all this, the one thing that matters is how you respond to change.

If you are weak inside, you’ll be batted about like a rowboat in a hurricane. But those who cultivate inner strength are able to weather any storm and flow with whatever challenges the universe throws their way.

The good news is you can increase your inner strength with a few key exercises, just like you would your body. Here are some tips:

1) Know yourself

Knowing you who you are and what you want in life is the foundation of power. Society has this expectation that we fit inside this small box called “normal” and anything outside that box is considered “weird”. But this detrimental to understanding who we are.

One of the best ways to find out what you really want in life is to sit down for an hour with no distractions and write about what you want your life to look like and what type of person you really consider yourself to be. Writing brings clarity to your mind.

2) Spend time in silence

The world is a noisy place and it can be hard to find time to yourself without distractions. But you need time to rejuvenate. Set aside one day a month to completely unplug from everything. Connect with nature and yourself.

3) Set a routine

Don’t waste your energy on things that don’t matter. Do things productively so you can use your inner strength for what really matters. Control what you can control.

Get a notebook and write down all your tasks and things you want to do. Then create processes and routines to get them done. Make sure you include time to connect with yourself and your thoughts.

4) Create the right circle

Hanging out with the wrong people can deplete your energy pretty quickly. If they’re judgmental and non-supportive, they can suck life from your inner core. Keep company with those who celebrate you and feed positive energy into your life.

5) Gain control of your body

One of the best ways to feel strong inside is to be strong on the outside. Make an effort to be fit. Eat well, exercise and dress in a way to make you feel good about yourself. If you can make yourself feel proud when you look in your mirror, it will only increase your inner power.

6) Get rid of things you don’t need

Keeping material items or relationships that serve no purpose is a waste of your inner energy. Be minimalist and only keep what you really need in life. Attaching yourself to items or objects is never a healthy thing to do. Be comfortable with who you are and realize that true inner peace comes from within.

7) Connect with the source of your power

Regardless whether you believe in a religion, you can gain inner strength by connecting with your spiritual strength. Through prayer, meditation or simply deep thought, you can center yourself in the universe and understand your role in something bigger and worthy. Connect with the world around you and realize that we’re all in this together.
