You’ve probably heard the hype about ‘mindfulness’ or ‘mindful living’. It’s one of the more popular topics in today’s mainstream media. But what is it? And why is it so popular?

Mindfulness isn’t the same as meditation. According to expert Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness “is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally….It’s about knowing what is on your mind.”

Pretty simple right? It’s about being aware of what is happening right now: whether that’s your thoughts, feelings or whatever is right in front of you.

One of the great things about mindfulness is that it’s available to you in every moment. You can practice mindfulness right now this very second and touch seeds of peace and joy within yourself. You can directly and immediately create a positive impact on your daily life and in a number of ways.

In order to start you off on the right foot, I’ve organized a list of my best mindfulness tips for living a more mindful life.

Here are 12 things to remember to be more mindful.

1) You Should Live in the Here and Now.

There is no time like the present! That might be a cliche, but it’s also very true. You shouldn’t be living in the past or wishing for the future. Appreciate the here and now.

2) Learn to Accept Yourself for Who You Are.

It’s a waste of time worrying about what other people are thinking about you. You are the only person who knows yourself inside and out and you should love and appreciate how unique that person is. You cannot be replaced and once you understand that, you’ll stop worrying about what others think.

3) Your Brain Can Be Tricky.

Your mind can be an ally or enemy and you form the world that you live in. If your brain isn’t on your side, then you’re setting yourself up for heartache. You need to push yourself in the right direction once in awhile!

4) No One Can Live Your Life For You.

You are the only person in control of your life. You make your own decisions and decide which path to take. You can’t let your happiness depend on things outside of your control.

5) The Right Thing and the Easy Thing Aren’t Always the Same.

The right choice isn’t always easy. But when that decision will guide you down the path you need to be on, you should go for it! It may be hard, but the benefits in the end will be well worth your while.

6) You Have to Work Hard for What You Want.

Nothing worth having comes easy. Sometimes the thing you want most is going to be hard to attain, but this is how you find out if it’s truly what you want!

7 ) Don’t Overwork Yourself.

It’s easy to get tied up in your work or get distracted when so many things are going on at once. But while you’re busy overworking yourself, you’re missing out on all the beautiful things life has to offer. Take some time to just relax and let all the stress go.

8) When You’re Tired, You Have Time to Think.

Sometimes it’s good to just sit down and reflect on everything you’ve accomplished. Get out of your own head for a minute and just find your inner peace.

9) You Can’t Always Be In Control.

It’s natural to want to make sure things go smoothly and according to plan. But the truth is that not everything is in our control. Once you grasp the fact that sometimes things can’t be helped you’ll allow yourself to become a calmer and more relaxed person.

10) Keep Your Word.

Just because someone else wants you to be something you’re not doesn’t mean you have to bend to their will. It’s important to be yourself and know who you are. If you aren’t sticking to your word on who you are and what you believe in, then who are you really hurting?

11) Don’t Let Anger Consume You.

Anger is a normal reaction to certain situations. But when you let that anger completely take over your life, then it becomes a problem. You should learn that it’s okay to be upset and angry, but you shouldn’t spend a great deal of time dwelling on that.

12) Negativity is the Root of All Evil.

Negativity is a quiet thief that sneaks into your mind when you’re not paying attention and steals away your happiness. That negative way of thinking builds and builds over time and eventually comes crashing down. Don’t let your thoughts take over your life. You control your thoughts so therefore only you control your life.
